Then and Now: Interview with Job Training Alumnus, LaVatte Turner

The Training Source: What were you doing before the Training Source?

Lavatte: I had worked in Corporate America for over 10 years in the computer field. I decided I wanted to utilize my work experience elsewhere. In between, I worked to make ends meet as a Tax Preparer. So, when I came to learn about

the Training Source I was in the midst of discovery. I was on a personal journey. I was journeying to find a place where I could work with children.

The Training Source: What program was you enrolled in at The Training Source?

Lavatte: There was office automation and professional development programs I was involved in while at the Training Source. For example, I was learning some best practices on using Windows more efficiently. I received training on the Microsoft Office products. Such applications as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook at various levels. In addition, I received professional training in the areas of customer service, interviewing, and hospitality.

The Training Source: Why did you join the Training Source?

LaVatte: After leaving Corporate America, while on my journey, I decided to try Tax Preparation. I’d seen a palm card of the Training Source here and there. One day while working at the Tax place, there it was again, a Training Source palm card. I had contemplated checking them out. So, one day when I was off from my job, I decided to pay the Training Source a visit. I met Iris Somerville. I let her know I was in the midst of finding permanent employment. She explained to me the program and how it works. After speaking with her, the program was what I believe was my next step to maintain and enhance both my technical and professional skill sets. So, I applied and the rest is history.

The Training Source: What skills are you using now that you acquired or enhanced during the program?

LaVatte: I believe the skill of public speaking was enhanced. It allowed me to be better at interviewing, be it one-on-one or if I had multiple interviewers. Not only that, but also now when speaking in front of the class or with other teachers. Also, I became more efficient using the various Microsoft applications, particularly PowerPoint, which I use quite a bit since distance learning.

The Training Source: Where do you work now and what it your title?

LaVatte: I am currently working in the Prince George’s County Public School system. I have now been with them for a little over a year. I am working in a charter public school. I am a specialist teacher. My specialty is Technology. I teach Kindergarten through eighth-grade.

The Training Source: What recommendations would you give to those who are seeking employment or to improve their skills to be  competitive in the workforce

LaVatte: I would recommend for those who are seeking employment to take advantage of the mock interviews. Don’t take for granted contributing during the morning sessions. I would say it helps with public speaking. It helped improve my confidence when interviewing. Take full advantage of the office automation part of the program. The better you can get around in the Microsoft applications, the more seamless it will be when you go to use them on the job.

The Training Source: Do you have a favorite quote?

LaVatte: A favorite quote of mine is “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”
