The Training Source Celebrates 29 Years of Success with Grand Re-Opening, Including Launch of WiFi-Connected Comcast Lift Zone
Lift Zones Provide Free, High-Speed WiFi and Digital Skills Content to Community Members
Seat Pleasant, MD – October 7, 2022 – The Training Source, Inc., a nonprofit community-based training organization, celebrated 29 years of service to Prince George’s County, Maryland and the Washington, D.C. Metro region with the grand re-opening of its training facility in the heart of Seat Pleasant, Maryland. The facility has undergone complete floor-to-ceiling renovations, including space reconfiguration and new energy efficient lighting, plumbing, wiring and HVAC.
In addition to the renovations, The Training Source partnered with Comcast to launch a Lift Zone in the space, which provides free, high-speed WiFi, powered by a Comcast Business solution, to connect community members to the Internet so they can fully participate in educational opportunities and the digital economy. Comcast has opened more than 100 Lift Zones in its Beltway Region – which includes Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and parts of Delaware, North Carolina, and West Virginia – as part of Project UP, the company’s comprehensive initiative to advance digital equity and help build a future of unlimited possibilities.
Executive Director Kim Rhim says, “The Training Source is extremely grateful to the Maryland General Assembly, especially the District 24 Delegation, for supporting a bond bill for The Training Source to renovate its building with the first major renovations since we occupied the facility in 1998. We are also grateful to the Redevelopment Authority of Prince George’s County for supplementing the funding for renovations as well as loyal funders such as the Cafritz Foundation, the Greater Washington Community Foundation, and the Philip L. Graham Fund with critical support that helped us transition from 100% in-person training to 100% remote training during COVID-19.”
Rhim adds, “Partnering with Comcast to launch a Lift Zone with high-speed WiFi and digital skills training helps take our support for the community to the next level. Our target population is not digitally savvy, so we’re thrilled to open our doors to help community members conduct business and learn about our no-cost training and services.”
While at the Lift Zone, members will also be able to learn more about Comcast’s Internet Essentials – the nation’s largest and most comprehensive Internet adoption program designed to help low-income Americans connect to low-cost, high-speed Internet at home – and the Federal Government’s Affordable Connectivity Program, which provides eligible households with an up to $30/month credit toward their Internet and/or mobile service. This can be combined with Comcast’s Internet Essentials, to provide eligible residents with free Internet service.
“We are proud to partner with the Training Source to ensure residents have the tools and resources necessary to thrive in today’s increasingly digital world,” said Misty Allen, Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs for Comcast’s Beltway Region.
Despite funding that was initially expected to cover all the renovations, pandemic-related delays and cost increases resulted in the project being converted to phases with the grand re-opening celebrating the conclusion of the first phase. The State has pledged support for the second phase of the renovation and The Training Source will launch new fundraising initiatives, including room naming corporate sponsorship opportunities.
